Mountaineering – Sv. Vid (St Vitus, Pag island)

Mountaineering – Sv. Vid (St Vitus, Pag island)

St. Vid is the highest peak of the island of Pag (348 m). There are the remains of the chapel of St. Vid (1348.g

A marvelous view to the numerous neighboring islands and a better part of the National Park of Velebit extends from the top. (The road from the big curve on the main road above Kolan through the valley of Kolan is mostly used for the climb on St. Vid.)

Climbing on the Sv.Vid – KOLAN – SV.VID (1 hour and 15 minutes)

The start is from the Kolan site (on the Pag-Novalja road), starting from the South exit of the road and the further towards Pag, a couple of hundred meters to the sharp curve to the right (serpentine).

From here, the road is separating towards South along the upper part of the Kolanjsko field and along its Eastern edge. You walk this path until it ends and t hen continue further along the track in the same direction until you reach the spot where the track turns towards right (West) some tens of meters, cutting into two the upper part of the field.

You come to a “door” – passage between the wall of stones (the stones are put together), fenced with wooden obstacle in order to prevent the movement of the sheep from one side to the other. You pass the “door”, continue along the track further to the South until you reach the Dukaca area. Then you reach the end of the field parcels, fenced by a wall of stones put together until you reach the “small fences” and continue further in the same direction some one hundred meter more, through the deforested area to the larger boulder on the right side of the track where there is a junction.

The marking of Sv.Vid continues along the track to the left side, up the hill towards East, the marked track leads straight South to the spot called Simuni and there is also a non-marked track on the right side, along the ascent towards West, also to Simuni.

Once we go up the track towards East until we reach the deforested, flat and rocky area, we pass this area and then continue and we and the ascending above the larger puddle at the side of the road, till the final peak.

At the peak there is a semi-ruined church of Sv.Vid, triangular marking and box which includes a book of impressions and seal next to it. At the peak we find the traces of life from the ancient Illyrians - Gradac.

KOLAN – DUBRAVE track (1 hour and 45 minutes)

When you reach from Kolan to Sv.Vid peak (349 meters), continue pass the peak towards its Easter side where the rock are falling towards the Pag bay..

The marking leads to the North, steeply below through slops and provides Alp view on the environment. Once you descend to the bottom of the rock, with due attention from eventual slipping and from the surrounding ravines, you reach the rockslide and the bigger “balk” under which we enter the forest of the Medunac oak trees (Quercus pubescens) and the white grab (Carpinus betulus). This is a special reservation of vegetation and the last remnant of the forests that once covered the entire island of Pag - Dubrave.

The marking exists from the forest on the old road of Pag – Novalja, along the edge of the Pag bay at Sv. Marija (St. Mary). The coast of the bay, because of its picturesque landscape, is protected as a sanctuary of natural landscapes.

KOLAN - SIMUNI track (1 hour and 15 minutes)

You start from Kolan, as with the Sv.Vid, till you reach the junction with the boulder. From here, then, continue further along the track to the South, hundred meters from the spot where smaller track separates towards West from the right side, along the ascent. The marking then leads, through a flat area and rocky deforested area, which ascends to the Western bank of the island and to the place called Simuni.

You pass beside a small village of Stari Simuni (Old Simuni) at the bottom of the track, which a church and with “shterna” well and further down you exit at the Pag – Novalja road, above the camping ground. After the road you should go right up the ascending towards Novalja, couple of hundred meters after the separation towards left and then down to the place called Simuni.

Attention !!!!

There is a danger of fall on the “naked” and stripped track. Especially on the Eastern rock on the peak there is danger from horned vipers and “black widow” spiders which are not rarity in the area you reach after the peak.

There is no drinking water in the entire area. In the case of sudden storm the church ruin is the only shelter that can be provided. Mountaineering gear is recommended when moving in this area!
